Reginald Musgrave, who was at college with Holmes, asks him to come down to his ancient manor where his butler and maid have mysteriously disappeared. The butler had been caught reading through personal documents, particularly a strange ritual that all owners of the manor have to learn.
Holmes believes that working out the meaning of the ritual may answer the puzzle of the disappearances.
