Violet Smith is offered a post teaching music by Carruthers, a friend of her father. While he is pleasant enough, he has a friend who is obnoxious towards Smith. Smith cycles to the location every day and she notices that she if being followed by a bearded man on a bicycle. The man does not approach her and, when she tries to meet him, he cycles away. She asks Holmes for help.
