Why in America, Lord St Simon meets an American heiress, Hatty Doran. They fall in love and travel to England. All appears to go well but, shortly after the marriage, she goes to her room, puts on an overcoat and leaves, not to return.
St Simon goes to meet Holmes to ask him to investigate.

Before they met, Doran had married a man in America. She believed that he had been killed so was content to marry St Simon. But, at the wedding, she saw the man in the congregation and fled with him.
