Summary: A banker holds a valuable coronet as collateral for a loan. In the night, he finds his son apparently stealing the jewel but the latter pleads his innocence.
Introduction

A noble man borrows some money from a bank, leaving a valuable coronet as collateral. The senior partner, Alexander Holder, keeps the jewel in his house for safekeeping. But he is awakened in the night to find his wastrel son apparently trying to break the coronet. He protests his innocence but refuses to elaborate further.

The actual thief was the banker's loved daughter, Mary, who had become involved with a disreputable man. The son was keeping silent to protect his father from knowing the truth about his daughter.
