Grant Munro and his wife Effie happily married until someone moves into a neighbouring house. He visits the house but is rudely dismissed. He later finds his wife mysteriously sneaking out and visiting the house but refuses to offer an explanation. When he follows her to the house, he sees a strange face at the window.

The person at the window was a black child that the wife had had when she lived in America. She had brought it over to be near her but covered its face to prevent rumours.
