Summary: An attempted burglary at a country house results in a coachman being murdered with a mysterious scrap of paper held in his hand.
Introduction

While recuperating from an illness, Holmes hears of a two mysterious burglaries at country houses. In the first, at the Acton estate, the only things stolen were of little value and unrelated. In the second, the Cunningham estate, a coachman has been found murdered with a scrap of torn paper in his hand. Holmes suspects that there is more to this than suggested.

The first burglary had been by the Cunnigham father and son who were trying to find evidence in a land dispute with the Acton estate. The coachman had seen them and blackmailed them. Consequently, they had murdered him and created a burglary to cover it up.
