Holmes receives a coded note from an informant that warns of danger to a man, John Douglas. As he decrypts the code, he learns from a police inspector that Douglas has been murdered. They investigate and discover he was killed with a sawn-off shotgun and there is a mysterious card by the body.

The body was not of Douglas but of a man who had come to the UK to kill him. Because he had been shot in the face, Douglas and his wife and friend they were able to disguise him as Douglas himself.
