An old friend of Watson's contacts Holmes because his devoted wife has been acting strangely. Although she appears to love her child, she has been seen apparently biting its neck. She has also been seen hitting her stepson. However she refuses to explain her behaviour.

The stepson had been jealous of the child and had attempted to poison it. The mother had sucked the poison out, hence the appearance of a vampire.
