A woman, Mrs Maberley, consults Holmes because she has been offered a generous sum for her house. The unusual thing though is that it includes all of the contents, personal as well as furniture. Then Holmes finds himself threatened to leave the case.

Maberley's son had had an affair with a rich woman in Italy. When she refused to marry him, he wrote a novel which would have revealed their affair. The manuscript was in Maberley's house and the woman wanted to acquire it secretly but honestly.
