Summary: The wife of a rich man sees him at the window of an opium den. When she investigates, she finds no trace of her husband except for a present he had bought.
Introduction

The wife of a rich man, Neville St Clair, spots her husband at the window of an opium den. When she and some policemen investigate, they find nobody inside apart from a beggar, the owner of the building and his assistant. However they find a present that he had intended to buy and his overcoat in the river.

Holmes is engaged to find the man.

St Clair and the beggar were the same man. He found that he could earn more by begging so he deceived his wife, pretending to go off to a genuine job.
